About Brian

Brian McEwing built a career that bridges the practical world of maritime operations and the technical demands of maritime law. He earned a B.S. in Political Science from Rutgers University–Camden in 1995 and returned to the same campus for his J.D., which he received in 2003. Those academic years bookend a period of hands-on work on the water and study in the classroom.

Early in his career he served as Port Captain for the Delaware River and Bay Authority’s Cape May Ferry in 2002. That role put him on the front lines of vessel operations, safety oversight and day-to-day logistics. He later entered private practice and worked as an attorney at Donna Adelsberger & Associates beginning in 2008. Three years after that move he became a partner at Reeves McEwing LLP in 2011, a position he has held while expanding a practice rooted in maritime law. He maintains an office in Philadelphia.

McEwing is admitted to practice in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and he is also authorized to appear before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He holds the Proctor in Admiralty certification through the Maritime Law Association and has been a proctor member of that association since 2008. The proctor credential and his operational background inform his work on cases that involve vessel operations, admiralty procedure and related regulatory matters.

His involvement in professional and regulatory bodies runs parallel to his private practice. He has served as a commissioner on the New Jersey Maritime Pilot Commission since 2013, a role that places him in the regulatory conversation about pilotage and harbor safety. He has also served as a trustee of the Cape May County Bar Association since 2012. Those roles give him regular exposure to the intersection of maritime regulation, local practice concerns and bar governance.

In the office he handles litigation and advisory work that touches maritime operations, admiralty claims and regulatory compliance. He draws on experience from both his years at sea and his years in court to address disputes that range from vessel incidents to licensing and administrative matters. He also handles appeals in federal court when cases proceed beyond trial.

McEwing balances practice, professional service and regulatory engagement. He represents clients from vessel operators to local entities and continues to practice maritime and admiralty law at Reeves McEwing LLP in the Philadelphia office.
