About Brian Damas
Brian Damas Thoman built a legal path that moves from classroom to courtroom and back again. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1995 with a B.A. in Political Science and American Government & Law. He earned his J.D. from Regent University School of Law in 2003 and pursued further study in international law at the University of Strasbourg, France in 2004.
Those academic years were followed by steady progression in practice. He worked as an associate lawyer beginning in 2006. The next year he joined the Office of the Commonwealth’s Lawyer as a senior assistant, a role that placed him inside the workings of the public legal system. In 2013 he founded Thoman Law, PLLC and took on the duties of managing partner.
Thoman’s memberships map to the contours of his work. He has belonged to the Virginia Bar Association and the American Bar Association since 2006. He joined the Newport News Bar Association in 2010. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, a connection that reflects part of his day-to-day casework. Between 2010 and 2012 he served as treasurer for his local homeowners association, a brief detour into community governance.
The timeline suggests familiarity with both sides of contested matters. Time spent at the Office of the Commonwealth’s Lawyer gave him exposure to public filings and courtroom procedure. Later, running his own firm required him to manage case strategy, client intake, and litigation logistics. Those experiences inform how he approaches client representation and case preparation.
Colleagues describe him as practical and detail-oriented in handling filings and hearings. He moves through paperwork with an eye for deadlines and hearings. He also places value on clear explanations for clients, translating legal steps into terms they can use.
Outside court, his international study in Strasbourg adds an uncommon chapter to a largely Virginia-centered career. The visit to France broadened his perspective on legal systems and introduced comparative questions that occasionally surface in more complex matters.
Thoman is licensed to practice law by the Virginia State Bar. He maintains memberships in local and national bar groups and runs his firm from its base in Virginia. He currently represents clients in criminal matters through his practice at Thoman Law, PLLC.
