About Brent W.

Brent W. Nicholls trained in finance and law before turning his attention to tax practice. He earned a Bachelor of Science in finance from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1990, completed his Juris Doctor at Rutgers University–Camden in 1993, and took an LL.M. in tax law and litigation at New York University School of Law in 1998. Those academic stops map a steady move from business foundations to specialized legal study.

Early in his career he combined transactional thinking and courtroom procedures. The finance degree gave him a numerical grounding. The J.D. provided a general legal toolkit. The LL.M. sharpened technical tax skills and introduced the litigation side of tax controversies. Over time he handled matters that required both advisory work and advocacy in contested tax issues.

His practice has centered on tax questions that arise in corporate and individual contexts. He has worked on tax controversy matters, returns and compliance issues, and disputes that turn on statutory interpretation and procedural rules. That work typically involves researching complex statutory schemes, preparing formal submissions and representing clients in hearings and settlements. He also has experience explaining technical tax concepts to nonlawyers, an important part of resolving disputes and planning transactions.

Colleagues and clients see him as methodical. He approaches cases by separating legal issues from factual ones, and then building positions grounded in statutory text and precedent. He spends time on the preparatory work—document analysis, drafting, and developing evidentiary paths—so the litigation phase is not a series of improvisations. That approach can shorten disputes or clarify bargaining positions when settlement talks begin.

Outside the courtroom and the drafting table, he has kept up with developments in tax law through continuing legal education and specialized study. The LL.M. program at New York University exposed him to advanced topics and competing theories, and he has drawn on that training when confronting novel issues or tight deadlines.

He now maintains a practice that concentrates on tax law and related litigation, advising clients on compliance, controversy and transactional tax matters.
