About Braxton
Braxton Hill earned a J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1977 and later received a B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1993. His formal training spans more than one era of modern practice. The dates reflect a long association with the law and higher education in Virginia.
Hill has practiced law since the late 1970s. He is listed with MerrittHill, PLLC, where he handles matters in trial and appellate settings. Over the years he has appeared in federal and state courts across the Commonwealth and beyond. His admissions include the U.S. Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit, the D.C. Circuit, the Fourth Circuit, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Professional involvement has been a recurring feature of Hill’s career. He holds memberships in the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He also served as Immediate Past President of The Bar Association of the City of Richmond. In 2012 he was president of the John Marshall American Inn of Court. From 2012 through 2021 he sat on the Board of Directors of the Federal Bar Association’s Richmond Chapter. Those roles placed him regularly in conversations about local court administration, mentoring, and bar governance.
Colleagues describe Hill as steady and exacting in court. He pursues clarity in filings and prefers straightforward argumentation before judges. That style has carried him into appellate dockets as well as into bankruptcy proceedings and district-court litigation. He has represented clients in matters that require navigation of complex procedural and appellate rules.
Outside litigation, Hill has been involved in programs that aim to strengthen practice standards among attorneys in Richmond and the surrounding region. His leadership roles in local bar institutions reflect sustained engagement with the legal community rather than episodic participation.
He continues to practice at MerrittHill, PLLC, where his work involves litigation and appellate matters across federal and state courts.
