About Bill
Bill Vig studied communication and politics before turning to law. He earned a B.A. in Communication and Political Science from Western Illinois University in 1998. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Illinois College of Law in 2004 and followed that with an M.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005. Those degrees provided a mix of advocacy training and an understanding of public communication that has informed his work in courtrooms and client meetings.
He began his legal career in public service. In 2006 he served as an Assistant State's Lawyer at the Sangamon County State's Lawyer's Office. That role placed him on the government side of criminal matters and gave him experience with case preparation, courtroom proceedings, and the local court system. After several years in public office he moved into private practice. In 2012 he joined Ackerman Law Office, P.C. as an associate. Four years later he established his own firm, Vig Law, P.C., where he became the principal attorney and handled a range of criminal defense matters. He is admitted to practice in Illinois and in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois.
His professional memberships reflect particular areas of interest. He holds membership in the Sangamon County Bar Association and in the National College for DUI Defense. The latter indicates ongoing engagement with issues specific to operating-under-the-influence cases, including changes in law, evidence rules, and defense techniques. At the county level he participates in the local bar community, which keeps him connected to judges and practitioners in the courts where he appears.
Those threads—public prosecution work, years in private practice, and membership in a national DUI defense organization—inform the kind of matters he handles. He draws on experience from both sides of the aisle when advising clients. His practice portfolio has included criminal charges and cases that intersect with impaired-driving laws.
He founded Vig Law, P.C. in 2016 and continues to operate the firm as its owner and lead attorney. He represents clients in state and federal courts in Illinois and handles criminal defense work, including DUI defense.
