About Alexander W.
Alexander W. Mejias earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2006. He completed a rigorous legal education at one of the nation’s older law schools, finishing at a time when the practice was beginning to reckon with changes in technology and market expectations. That academic grounding provided a foundation for a practice spanning state lines.
His career led him into private practice and into management roles. In 2019 he became Managing Lawyer at James River Law. The title reflects both a leadership position and ongoing courtroom and client work. Over the years he has balanced casework with the administrative demands that come with running a law practice.
Mejias is admitted to practice in Virginia and in New York. Those dual admissions allow him to handle matters that touch both jurisdictions and to advise clients whose issues require familiarity with more than one state’s rules. He has spent much of his career working within the frameworks each state imposes on litigation and transactional work, gaining practical familiarity with regional courts and filings.
As Managing Lawyer at James River Law, Mejias oversees daily office operations and coordinates work among attorneys and staff. He directs case preparation and helps set litigation strategy while also managing client relationships and the firm’s administrative needs. The managing lawyer role requires attention to deadlines, firm finances, and personnel matters alongside the substantive legal tasks.
Colleagues describe him as methodical in approach and steady under pressure. He tends to break complex problems into manageable parts and to rely on a careful reading of statutes, rules and precedent. That style carries through to how the firm organizes caseloads and communicates with clients.
Outside the office, Mejias maintains professional memberships. Those affiliations provide access to continuing legal education and to professional networks that support the firm’s work. He also stays current on developments in both Virginia and New York law through ongoing study and attendance at legal programs.
Today, he practices from James River Law, where he combines management responsibilities with client representation in matters arising in Virginia and New York. His current practice focuses on serving clients across those two jurisdictions.
