About Adam B.

Adam B. Portnow blends a technical undergraduate background and legal training into a practice shaped by both fields. He earned a B.S. from the University of Florida in 1999 in Digital Arts & Sciences and Computer Information Science & Engineering. Six years later he completed a J.D. at St. Thomas University School of Law in 2005. Those credentials sit at the center of how he approaches client matters.

He has been based in Florida for his legal career. In 2009 he began operating under the Law Office of Adam B. Portnow, P.L. That same year marked deeper engagements in the local legal community, including membership in the Sarasota County Bar Association beginning in 2008. He is a current member of the Florida Bar and in 2013 he added registration as a patent practitioner before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. That registration allows him to prosecute patent applications where appropriate.

Portnow has combined courtroom and community roles alongside private practice. He has served as a Teen Court judge in Sarasota County since 2010, hearing cases that involve juvenile defendants and restorative-justice principles. He joined the Judge John M. Scheb Inn of Court in 2009 and later served as its president for the 2022-2023 term. Early in the past decade he took on editorial duties for The Docket, the Sarasota County Bar Association’s newspaper, from 2010 to 2011. These roles reflect ongoing engagement with local legal institutions and professional development forums.

His educational path—an undergraduate degree grounded in computer information sciences and a law degree—paired with registration at the Patent Office informs the kinds of matters he accepts. He is able to file and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO. Beyond patent work, his practice involves the kinds of civil matters commonly handled by small law offices serving local and regional clients; he runs his practice from the firm he established in 2009.

Colleagues and community participants encounter him most often in courtrooms, Inn of Court meetings, and Teen Court sessions. He maintains active standing in the Florida Bar and in professional associations tied to his practice. His current practice handles patent prosecution before the USPTO and civil matters out of the Law Office of Adam B. Portnow, P.L.
