About William D.

William D. Ashwell combined a liberal arts start with a law degree. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 2008 with a B.A. in English. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law in 2012. Those credentials set up a practice that moves between trial dockets and appellate briefs.

He is admitted to practice in Virginia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a current member of the Virginia State Bar. Those admissions allow him to appear in state courts, pursue federal appeals, and participate in matters that reach the nation’s highest tribunal.

Ashwell’s professional life has been anchored at Ashwell & Ashwell, PLLC. He works with clients on disputes that require courtroom work and written advocacy. He spends time drafting pleadings, arguing motions and preparing briefs for appellate review. The practice demands an attention to both factual detail and legal narrative. His academic background in English informs how he approaches that writing.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparation. He tends to break complex problems into discrete issues that can be addressed in court filings or at oral argument. He also spends time evaluating whether a matter belongs in state court or in the federal system. Admission to the Fourth Circuit and the Supreme Court gives him a route for post-trial review when a client’s case raises broader legal questions.

Outside of motion calendars and briefs, Ashwell engages in the day-to-day case management that keeps a small firm functioning. That work includes client counseling, discovery oversight and coordinating with experts when cases require specialized technical input. The pace of small-firm practice can be brisk. He balances courtroom deadlines with the administrative work that underpins litigation.

He maintains active membership in the Virginia State Bar and continues to develop the practical skills needed for both trial and appellate work. He currently represents clients in state and federal litigation and holds admission in Virginia, the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
