About Walter A.

Walter A. Piel trained first as a political scientist and public administrator, then turned to the law. He earned a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point in 1991, studying public administration and political science. He completed his J.D. at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1994.

Piel entered legal practice in Wisconsin soon after law school. He has been a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin since 1994 and is also active in the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, a membership he holds from 1994 to the present. Those long-standing ties to state legal organizations have framed much of his professional life.

He opened Piel Law Office, LLC and serves as its owner. The office handles cases at the local level across Wisconsin. Piel built the practice as a small firm meant to provide hands-on representation. He manages daily operations and directly oversees casework.

His work has centered on criminal defense. He represents people facing misdemeanor and felony charges in state courts. Piel handles arraignments, pretrial motions, plea negotiations and trials. He also works on post-conviction matters when clients seek to challenge outcomes or sentences.

Piel’s courtroom approach is pragmatic. He prepares for hearings carefully and invests time in case investigation. He draws on membership in professional groups for continuing education and peer discussion. That network provides regular updates on trial practice, evidentiary issues and sentencing developments in Wisconsin.

Clients tend to contact him early in their cases. He focuses on immediate defense strategies, often seeking to limit exposure through motions or negotiated resolutions. When cases proceed to trial he continues to represent clients in court, arguing facts and legal issues to judges and juries.

Outside the courtroom, Piel’s career reflects steady professional involvement rather than public-facing roles. He has not been presented here as holding academic posts or public offices. Instead, his record shows continual private practice supported by participation in bar and defense associations.

Piel continues to maintain an active practice through Piel Law Office, LLC. He practices criminal defense throughout Wisconsin and represents clients at all stages of state court proceedings.
