About W. Edward Riley
W. Edward Riley IV built a career in Virginia law that moves between courtroom work and appellate filings. He began his academic path at the University of Virginia and completed his legal education at the University of Richmond School of Law. Those years framed a practice grounded in the procedural and substantive demands of both state and federal courts.
After law school Riley entered private practice and rose to partnership at RILEY & WELLS - Lawyers-At-Law. He has spent his career representing clients under the firm’s banner. His role as partner places him at the center of case strategy, client counseling and litigation management.
Riley is admitted in Virginia and in several federal jurisdictions. That includes the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia. Those admissions allow him to handle matters at trial and on appeal. He routinely prepares briefs, argues motions and appears for hearings across those courts.
Colleagues describe Riley as steady in court and deliberate in preparation. He tends to approach cases with careful attention to procedure. That orientation shows in how he navigates deadlines, assembles records and builds arguments for judges. He has worked on matters that require coordination between state and federal dockets and on appeals that turn on narrow questions of law.
Outside the courtroom, Riley participates in the internal work of the firm. As partner he helps shape case intake and oversees teams of lawyers and staff. He also manages client relationships that range from individuals to businesses. The day-to-day responsibilities include assessing litigation risk and advising on tactical choices that affect both settlement and trial postures.
Riley’s academic ties to Virginia remain a through-line in his practice. His University of Virginia undergraduate experience and legal training at the University of Richmond underpin a practice rooted in the Commonwealth’s courts and procedural rules. He continues to represent clients in matters that arise in Virginia state courts and in federal courtrooms across the Eastern and Western Districts and the Fourth Circuit. His current practice focuses on representation in Virginia state and federal courts.
