About Vonda

Vonda Covington studied psychology before turning to law. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego in 1980 and a Master of Arts in Experimental Cognitive Psychology from Rice University in 1984, where she developed a special interest in learning differences. She returned to school for a law degree and received her Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston in 1992.

Her early professional steps included bar membership on the West Coast before she established her practice in Texas. Records show membership in the Oregon State Bar beginning in 1992, followed by admission to the Texas bar in 1993. In 1995 she opened Covington Law Office, PLLC and has been practicing there since. The firm’s online presence lists that office name and the practice has operated under it for many years.

Covington’s background in psychology informs how she approaches cases. She often integrates an understanding of learning differences and family dynamics into client interviews and dispute resolution. Over the years she has gravitated toward family law matters and alternative dispute resolution, including collaborative law and mediation, rather than traditional litigation as the first option.

Her involvement in the collaborative law movement is long-standing. She served on the founding board of the Alliance of Collaborative Law Lawyers from 2001 to 2004 and later helped establish the Fort Bend collaborative group, serving as its founding president. She has been a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals since 2012 and holds membership in the Collaborative Law Institute of Texas. Locally, she is active in the Houston Bar Association and the Fort Bend County Bar Association, including repeated service in collaborative and family law sections.

Professional memberships span multiple organizations and decades. She has been in the Texas State Bar’s Family Law Section since 1994 and is listed in the Houston Bar Association and the Association of Women Lawyers from the mid-1990s onward. Her engagement with professional education and collegial groups includes participation in the College of the State Bar of Texas in the early 2000s.

Colleagues describe her as steady and pragmatic in handling family matters. She advocates processes that allow parties to retain control over outcomes where possible. Today she continues to operate Covington Law Office, PLLC and maintains an active practice concentrated on family law and collaborative dispute resolution.
