About Van A.
Van A. Larson has spent decades practicing law in and around Kane County. He trained first as a student of government and law, earning his undergraduate degree from Drake University in 1974 and his J.D. from John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 1978. He entered the legal profession at a moment when local courts and county offices shaped many lawyers' careers, and he stayed close to that world.
Larson began his career in Kane County's legal offices. In 1978 he worked in the Kane County States Lawyer Office. Two years later he joined DeBartolo & DeBartolo as an associate. The early years of his practice included work on both sides of the courtroom aisle. In 1982 he served as an associate at Landau & Associates and also took on a role as Kane County Special Conflict Defender, a post that placed him in the sometimes tense overlap between the public and private duties of local lawyers.
By 1984 Larson was a firm leader. He served as president of Larson & Simpson, P.C., a firm role that carried administrative and supervisory responsibilities as well as casework. That position followed several years of steady practice in Kane County and a continued presence in local bar organizations. His time in private practice ran alongside periods of public service and court admissions that broadened where he could appear and argue cases.
Larson's professional memberships track a long involvement in county and township legal affairs. He joined the Illinois Bar Association and the Kane County Bar Association's Lawyer Referral Service in 1978. He was admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois from 1978 until 1993. He has served as Batavia Township Lawyer since 1985 and has been a member of the Township Lawyers of Illinois since 2009. Those roles reflect a steady engagement with municipal and township institutions over many years.
Today Larson continues to work in the same general community where he began. He maintains ties to local bar groups and township offices and carries the experience of both courtroom work and legal counsel for local governments. His current practice focuses on township and other local government legal matters in Kane County.
