About Timothy R.
Timothy R. Bussey began his legal training in the Midwest and carried that foundation into a long career in criminal defense and DUI law. He earned a J.D. from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1991 after completing a B.S. in Finance at the University of Iowa in 1988. Early in his career he served as a judge advocate in the United States Air Force, including active duty at Peterson Air Force Base in 1992.
After leaving active duty, Bussey moved into public service. He worked as a deputy district lawyer in the El Paso County District Lawyer's Office in 1995. That experience in a prosecutor's office gave him a close view of how cases are prepared and tried, and it informed his later work defending clients in state court.
In 1997 he founded The Bussey Law Office, P.C. and took on the role of managing partner. He has led the firm since then, handling cases that range from routine traffic-related offenses to more complex criminal matters. His courtroom work spans pretrial litigation, evidentiary hearings and jury trials.
Bussey’s continuing education traces a steady interest in the scientific and technical aspects of DUI and impaired driving cases. His certificates include numerous sessions with the National College for DUI Defense and Harvard Law School DUI summer programs, NHTSA field sobriety and instructor courses, a blood and urine training seminar through Emory University School of Law, and workshops on breath alcohol instrumentation. In 2014 he served on the faculty of the National College for DUI Defense, teaching other lawyers about scientific evidence and courtroom strategies.
He maintains memberships in national and local bar groups. He has been a life member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 1998. He is also a member of the Colorado Bar Association and the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, both since 1997, and the El Paso County Defense Bar since 1994. He served as a state delegate to the National College for DUI Defense from 2007 to 2009.
Colleagues and clients describe Bussey as a practitioner who emphasizes careful examination of evidence and detailed preparation. He regularly reviews lab results, sobriety testing procedures and police reports to test the strength of the state’s case. In court he favors clear argument and targeted cross-examination over theatrical presentations.
He currently practices criminal defense and DUI defense at The Bussey Law Office, P.C.
