About Timothy M.
Timothy M. Brown built a foundation in the sciences before turning to law. He earned a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from San Diego State University in 1995, followed by an MBA from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 1997. He then completed a J.D. at California Western School of Law in 2000 and later took an M.S. in Biotechnology at Johns Hopkins University in 2005. The combination of science and legal training shaped the path he would follow.
He began his legal career at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he worked as a patent examiner starting in 2001. That experience offered a close view of patent prosecution and the standards applied to biomedical inventions. After several years examining applications, Brown moved into industry and private practice, applying his technical background to commercial and research settings.
In 2006 he took on a role as Director of Intellectual Property at Stemedica Cell Technologies, Inc. The same year he also began work as a patent lawyer at TMB Law. Over the following decade he alternated between in-house positions and law firm work. In 2014 he served as patent counsel at Fate Therapeutics, Inc., and in 2016 he joined CardioCell, LLC as Vice President of Intellectual Property. Those roles involved assessing invention portfolios, overseeing prosecution strategy, and coordinating IP work across research and business teams.
Brown holds registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. That credential complements his scientific degrees and law degree. He has handled matters common to life sciences practice: drafting and prosecuting patent applications, evaluating freedom-to-operate and patentability, and advising on intellectual property strategy for biotechnology companies. His background in cell and molecular biology and biotechnology informs how he approaches technical claims and patent drafting.
Colleagues and clients have turned to him for practical guidance on patent prosecution in the biotech and medical fields. He has experience working with emerging companies and established research organizations. His career moves reflect an interest in bridging laboratory work and legal protection for inventions.
He currently practices patent law at TMB Law - Patent and Trademark Services, handling patent preparation and prosecution for clients in biotechnology and life sciences.
