About Timothy
Timothy James has built a long career at the intersection of state and federal practice. He is admitted to the bars of South Dakota and Nebraska and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. He serves as president of James Law, PC, a firm he has led since the early 1990s.
He completed undergraduate studies at the University of South Dakota, earning a B.A. in Political Science and Mass Communications in 1983. He remained at the same university for law school and received his J.D. in 1988. Those years set the stage for early court work and a string of positions in both clerical and litigation roles.
After law school he clerked for the United States District Court, South Dakota Western Division, beginning in 1989. That clerkship put him inside federal courtroom procedures and the practical rhythms of civil and criminal dockets. He moved from the clerk’s office into private practice and, by 1992, was working as a litigator at Querry & Harrow in Chicago, Illinois.
A year later he returned to lead his own practice. In 1993 he became president of James Law, PC. The firm’s work has covered state and federal matters and included trial-level work. Over the decades he has handled case development, motion practice, and courtroom advocacy. He has represented clients in contested hearings and bench and jury trials.
His admissions to the South Dakota bar, the Nebraska bar and the U.S. Supreme Court reflect a career that spans regional practice and matters that can move onto national filings. He maintains membership in the Nebraska State Bar Association and holds other professional memberships. Those ties keep him connected to procedural developments and changes in court practice in the Midwest.
Colleagues and opposing counsel describe him as experienced in courtroom procedure and litigation strategy, and he is often the lawyer who sees cases through from plea or petition to resolution. His background includes federal and state litigation, and he draws on years of trial work when advising clients and preparing cases for hearing.
Today he leads James Law, PC, managing client matters and supervising litigation practice. He practices across South Dakota and Nebraska and continues to handle civil and federal cases in state and federal courts, including matters that reach appellate or national levels.
