About Tim
Tim Nay is a founding partner at the Law Offices of Nay & Friedenberg LLC in Portland, Oregon. He was admitted to the Oregon State Bar on September 14, 1984, and is also licensed to practice in Washington. The firm, located at 6500 SW Macadam Ave, Suite 300, Portland, OR 97239, specializes in estate planning, elder law, and related areas. He earned his Juris Doctor from Willamette University College of Law in 1984. Prior to his legal career, he obtained a Master of Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University in 1977 and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Chapman University in 1973.
His undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles, completed in 1968. Throughout his career, Tim has been a trailblazer in elder law and advocacy. He is the founding president and a Fellow of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), a founding member and past secretary of the National Alliance of Medicare Set Aside Professionals. The founding president of Guardian Partners. His work includes leading roles with the Alzheimer’s Association Oregon Chapter and the Oregon Gerontological Association.
In 1997, he successfully challenged the “Granny Goes To Jail Law.” In 1984, Tim joined the Family Support Project at the Neurological Sciences Center at Good Samaritan Hospital, aiming to develop the concept of Elder Law in the Northwest. This initiative led to the founding of NAELA, where he served as the founding president. His firm continues to advocate locally and nationally to improve the lives of seniors and disabled clients. Tim has also been involved in significant legal actions, including Peebler and Nay v — Reno, which neutralized the “Granny Goes To Jail” law, and Tim Nay v. Oregon DHS, a 2016 opinion of the Oregon Supreme Court.
These cases reflect his commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of seniors. He is a member of the Oregon State Bar and the Washington State Bar Association. Additionally, he serves on the Advisory Boards of the Academy of Special Needs Planners and the Society of Settlement Planners. Tim was the recipient of the 2007 Unaward from the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
