About Thomas

Thomas Wertman studied crime, law, and justice at Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a B.S. in 2010 after starting in 2007. He continued his legal education at the University of New Hampshire School of Law and completed his J.D. in 2014. Those formative years combined classroom work and practical exposure to tax and appellate issues.

His early career mixed research, writing and public service. While still a student he contributed to the Westlaw Journal as a writer in 2011 and served as a student volunteer at the Internal Revenue Service Office of Chief Counsel in 2013. After law school he spent time clerking for Hage Hodes, P.A., and then accepted a judicial clerkship with the New Hampshire Superior Court in 2014. He also worked as an advanced tax return preparer for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program in 2015.

By 2017 he was practicing in estate planning as a lawyer at Boyd & Boyd, P.C. That role required translating technical tax rules into practical documents for clients. The combination of IRS exposure, tax return work and judicial experience gave him a broad view of how tax and probate issues play out in everyday practice.

Wertman is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and the District of Massachusetts, in New Hampshire, and before the United States Tax Court. He holds membership in the New Hampshire State Bar. His background spans courtroom procedure, tax administration, and estate planning drafting. Colleagues have noted that his work bridges the detailed technical work of tax compliance and the client-facing tasks of estate planning.

He writes and reviews documents that must stand up in administrative and judicial settings. That includes tax forms, wills, trusts and ancillary probate filings. The earlier editorial work for a legal journal informs how he organizes complex legal material so it reads clearly for judges, clients and other lawyers.

Today Wertman practices in the New England region and appears in forums that include the Tax Court when federal tax controversies arise. He concentrates his practice on estate planning and tax-related matters across Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
