About Thomas J. Lucente
Thomas J. Lucente Jr. is a public defender who practices in Ohio. He earned his J.D. from The University of Toledo College of Law in 2012. That education laid the groundwork for courtroom work and legal advocacy. He is admitted to practice in Ohio and works out of the Office of the Mercer County Public Defender.
After law school, Lucente built a practice centered on criminal defense in the state system. He moved into public defense work and has since focused on representing people who cannot afford private counsel. His role places him regularly before county courts. He appears at arraignments, hearings, plea conferences and trials. The work is often fast-paced and requires quick legal judgment alongside careful case preparation.
In day-to-day practice, Lucente handles a range of criminal matters. He represents clients charged with misdemeanors as well as more serious felony offenses. He interviews clients, reviews police reports and other discovery, and files motions when legal issues require resolution. Much of his time is spent preparing for trial, negotiating pleas when appropriate, and advocating for clients at sentencing.
Courtroom advocacy is a central part of his work. He argues suppression motions, cross-examines witnesses, and contests the government’s evidence when it is weak or incomplete. He also spends time advising clients about the practical consequences of different decisions, such as plea offers versus going to trial. That combination of advocacy and counseling informs his daily practice.
Outside the courtroom, Lucente coordinates with investigators and consults experts when cases demand technical analysis. He manages caseloads that require both administrative attention and detailed legal research. The office environment calls for balancing many competing deadlines while maintaining client communication and case strategy.
Colleagues describe him as steady under pressure and pragmatic in approach. He keeps an eye on procedural details while preparing for the larger questions a case may raise. His work serves the county court system by ensuring representation for those charged with crimes, and he handles matters across the full spectrum of criminal proceedings in Mercer County.
As of 2026 he continues to serve at the Office of the Mercer County Public Defender, representing indigent defendants in Ohio state criminal matters.
