About Thomas
Thomas Estes built a legal foundation in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He attended the University of Virginia from 1987 to 1990 and earned his law degree from the College of William and Mary in 1991. He returned to William and Mary for a Doctor of Juridical Science, completing the S.J.D. in 1996.
He began his post-graduate legal work in patent and trademark litigation. In 1996 he worked at Oliff and Berridge, PLC, handling disputes that required technical and procedural knowledge of intellectual property law. The move from private practice into public defense came two years later when he joined the Office of the Public Defender for the City and County of Fairfax as a deputy public defender in 1998.
Estes remained in public defense through the early 2000s. He joined the Committee for Public Counsel Services, Public Defender Division, as a public defender in 2002. Four years later he stepped into a leadership role as Lawyer-in-Charge for that same division in 2006. Those years in public service gave him extended courtroom experience and familiarity with trial practice across a range of criminal matters.
In 2013, he served as a District Court Judge in the Massachusetts Judiciary. That judicial role added a different perspective on case management and decision-making. It also broadened his exposure to the procedural side of the court system in Massachusetts.
Estes holds licenses to practice in both Massachusetts and Virginia. He maintains membership in the State Bar of Massachusetts and is an active member of local bar groups, including the Hampden County Bar Association since 2019 and the Hampshire County Bar Association since 2020. Those memberships reflect ongoing engagement with the legal communities where he practices.
He now practices from Estes Law Offices. His background spans intellectual property litigation, public defense, court leadership and a period on the bench. He applies those experiences in private practice, handling criminal defense, civil litigation and intellectual property matters in Massachusetts and Virginia.
