About Thomas A.

Thomas A. Hackett is an attorney licensed in Washington and Oregon who works across a range of estate, tax and business matters. He blends a law school background in tax and estate planning with years of practical experience in regional law firms. His career has moved steadily from small firms toward a multi-office practice.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Seattle University in 2003. He went on to the University of Washington School of Law, where his studies emphasized tax, business and estate planning. That academic training informs the transactional and advisory work he does for individuals and business clients.

Hackett began practicing law in the early 2010s. He worked at HS Law Office, P.C. (formerly Hanna Strader, P.C.) in 2010. He spent time at Horenstein Law Group PLLC in 2012 and at Sussman Shank LLP in 2013. In 2014 he joined NW Legacy Law, P.S., where he remains on staff. Those years in different practice settings exposed him to probate administration, trust work, and business formation and governance issues.

His practice encompasses estate planning, probate and trust administration, tax planning and business law. He prepares wills and trusts, handles estate and trust settlements, and advises on tax implications of estate and business decisions. He also assists clients with entity selection and basic transactional matters for small and closely held businesses. He represents individuals, trustees and business owners in planning and in post-death administration matters.

Colleagues and clients see him as a practical adviser who works through documents and procedures step by step. He handles drafting and review of estate and business documents in routine and moderately complex matters. He spends much of his time counseling clients about the interaction of state probate rules and federal and state tax considerations, as well as the day-to-day governance needs of small businesses.

Since joining NW Legacy Law, P.S. in 2014, he has worked out of that firm’s offices in the Pacific Northwest. He continues to maintain registrations to practice in both Washington and Oregon and to serve clients on estate, tax and business issues. His current practice focuses on estate planning, trust and probate matters, and business law.
