About Terrence D.
Terrence D. McCay took a different route to the law. He began his professional education in forestry and natural resources, earning a B.S. in Forestry from the University of Kentucky in 1980, then a master’s in Forest Management and Economics and an M.B.A. from Virginia Tech in 1982 and 1983. More than a decade later he returned to school and received his J.D. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University in 1999.
After law school McCay built a practice that spans state and federal courtrooms. He is admitted in Louisiana and in federal courts that include the Fifth Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Middle, Eastern and Western Districts of Louisiana. Those admissions have enabled him to handle matters across trial and appellate levels in the region.
He is a partner at Kean Miller LLP. At the firm he handles civil litigation and represents private and corporate clients in disputes that reach both state and federal tribunals. His earlier training in forestry and business informs how he approaches regulatory, environmental and commercial issues. That background gives him an additional perspective when cases intersect with natural resource matters or industry regulation.
McCay’s professional associations reflect a mix of bar involvement, industry ties and community work. He holds memberships in the Federal Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Louisiana State Bar Association, and belongs to the Albert Tate Chapter of the American Inns of Court. Locally he participates in the Southwest Louisiana Bar Association and the Southwest Louisiana Defense Counsel. He also maintains ties to the Louisiana Forestry Association and has been involved with the Louisiana Chemical Industry Alliance.
Outside of strictly legal work he has served on community and nonprofit boards. His roles have included board service with the Volunteer Center of Southwest Louisiana and Crimestoppers of Lake Charles, involvement as a past vice-president of the Beauregard Parish Chapter of the Louisiana Council on Child Abuse, and volunteer work with CASA in Calcasieu Parish. He is also connected to the Imperial Calcasieu Human Resource Managers Association.
Colleagues describe McCay as steady in the courtroom and methodical in preparing cases. He practices from Kean Miller LLP and continues to accept litigation and regulatory matters in Louisiana and in the federal courts where he is admitted. He currently practices civil litigation and related regulatory and business matters.
