About James Edward Sudduth
James Edward Sudduth III earned his law degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, receiving his J.D. in 2013 after completing undergraduate studies there in finance in 2009. He moved from the classroom to the courtroom in a few quick steps. The academic record links him to LSU for both degrees and to the Baton Rouge campus where he trained in legal writing, trial advocacy and the practical aspects of litigation.
He began his professional career in public service. In 2013 he joined the Calcasieu Parish District Lawyer's Office as an assistant district lawyer. A year later he took on additional responsibility as the office's Misdemeanor Section Chief. Those roles placed him in the local criminal justice system early in his career, handling day-to-day courtroom work, supervising misdemeanor dockets, and gaining direct experience with arraignments, plea negotiations and short-form trials.
After his time in the district lawyer's office he moved into private practice. He is listed as an attorney at Sudduth & Associates, LLC. In private practice he expanded the kinds of matters he handles. The shift allowed him to represent individual clients and to appear in civil forums as well as criminal ones. He also maintains admissions in multiple jurisdictions, including Texas and Louisiana, and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Sudduth has been active in bar and professional organizations since the start of his legal career. He has been a member of the American Bar Association and the Louisiana State Bar Association since 2013, and joined the Texas State Bar in 2014. He is also affiliated with national groups that focus on criminal defense and employment law, including the National Academy of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Association for Justice, and the National Employment Lawyers Association. Other memberships include the American Society of Legal Advocates and local Inns of Court.
Colleagues describe his background as a blend of prosecutorial experience and private-practice litigation. The early years in the district lawyer's office gave him hands-on time in courtrooms and with case management. In private practice he applies that courtroom familiarity to contested matters, pretrial work, and settlement negotiations. He handles matters that require courtroom presence as well as those that center on client counseling and document drafting.
He currently practices with Sudduth & Associates, LLC, representing clients in matters that include criminal law and civil litigation, and he maintains active bar memberships in both Texas and Louisiana.
