About Ted
Ted Smith graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in Law in 1973 and earned his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School in 1976. He moved into practice after law school and maintained a steady presence in Indiana's legal community for decades. His education at Notre Dame provided the foundation for a long career in litigation and rule-making work.
He has practiced under the name Ted Smith Lawyer at Law. Over the years he has handled matters in state and federal courts and has taken on roles that extend beyond individual cases. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Seventh Circuit, and in Indiana, which has allowed him to appear in a range of forums and handle appeals as well as trial work.
Smith has been active in trial lawyer circles. He served as president of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association from 2000 to 2001 and holds the title of Fellow in the College of Fellows of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association since 1996. The association records also list him as a Director Emeritus dating back to the late 1970s. These roles reflect long service in organizations that represent litigators and personal-injury counsel across the state.
His involvement with bar governance and court rules has been significant. He served on the Indiana Supreme Court Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure from 2003 through 2012 and was chairperson of that committee from 2009 to 2012. He also sat on the Board of Managers of the Indiana State Bar Association from 1988 to 1990. Those positions placed him in conversations about civil procedure and court administration, and he participated in the process that shapes how Indiana courts operate.
Smith has combined legal work with community service. He was a trustee of the Community Hospital of Anderson & Madison County from 1995 to 2004 and served as chairperson of that board from 2003 to 2004. For a period he held membership in the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives, from 1990 until 2016, indicating extended involvement in Social Security claims and related advocacy.
Today he continues to practice as Ted Smith Lawyer at Law in Indiana. He represents clients in trial litigation and handles appeals, and his record shows sustained engagement in rule-making, bar leadership and Social Security claimant representation. His current practice focuses on litigation and appellate work in Indiana and federal courts.
