About Stuart P.

Stuart P. Meyer trained first as an engineer before turning to law. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1982 and followed that with a M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University in 1985, where his studies concentrated on information sciences and systems. He completed his legal education at Yale Law School, receiving a J.D. in 1988. Those academic steps left him comfortable in both technical detail and legal analysis.

After law school, Meyer built a practice that combined those two strands. He is associated with Fenwick & West LLP, where he has spent his career handling matters that require both legal training and technical understanding. His background in electrical engineering and information systems has informed the kinds of questions he takes on and the clients he serves. Colleagues describe him as someone who reads circuit diagrams and patent claims with equal attention.

Meyer is admitted to practice in multiple jurisdictions. He holds bar admissions in the District of Columbia, California and Vermont, and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Those credentials allow him to represent clients in litigation, prosecution and transactional work across state lines and in federal patent proceedings. His registration with the USPTO is a steady thread through his professional profile.

In practice he engages with intellectual property and patent matters that sit at the intersection of law and technology. He prepares and prosecutes patent applications, advises on intellectual property strategy, and supports licensing and dispute work. He often handles matters arising from electrical engineering and software-related inventions, relying on his earlier academic training to evaluate technical issues and explain them to nontechnical audiences. His approach is methodical; he breaks complex subjects into manageable parts and communicates them plainly.

Beyond client work, Meyer has remained connected to developments in patent law and technology. He keeps current on the evolving body of case law and regulatory guidance that shapes patent practice. He maintains active admissions across several jurisdictions and before the USPTO to meet clients where their work occurs. He currently practices patent and intellectual property law at Fenwick & West LLP.
