About Steven H.
Steven H. Schafer began his legal path in the mid-1970s. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1976 and completed his Juris Doctor at Boston College Law School in 1979. Those formative years set the stage for a practice that has spanned state and federal courts and a long record of involvement in bar and trial organizations.
He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and he is credentialed to appear in the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit as well as the U.S. District Courts for Massachusetts and Connecticut. Over the decades he has combined courtroom work with organizational leadership. His name appears on the rolls of the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Connecticut State Bar. He has been active on the Board of Delegates of the Massachusetts Bar Association and has maintained membership in the Massachusetts State Bar and the University of Massachusetts Club.
Schafer has been especially visible in trial lawyer circles. He served as president of the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Lawyers for the 1998–1999 term and has participated on that group's Board of Governors. He has also served in leadership roles at the national level, including positions with the American Association for Justice where he served as a state delegate and as a governor, and he has chaired committees in various organizations. Those roles reflect a lengthy engagement with issues affecting courtroom practice and bar governance.
In day-to-day practice he has worked on civil litigation matters that require trial readiness. He has experience in preparing cases for contested hearings and jury trials in both state and federal venues. Colleagues and peers have known him for steady participation in bar activities and for bringing institutional knowledge to committee work. He has balanced casework with committee assignments and governance duties over a career that now spans more than four decades.
He maintains an active practice in New England, regularly handling litigation in Massachusetts and Connecticut and appearing in the federal courts that serve those jurisdictions. He continues to be involved in professional associations while representing clients in civil matters in state and federal court. His current practice handles civil litigation and trial matters in state and federal courts.
