About Steven

Steven Cernak built his legal foundations at the University of Michigan. He earned an A.B. in 1986, then returned to campus to complete both an M.A. and a J.D. in 1989. Those twin degrees, one in the arts and the other in law, inform a practice that blends doctrinal analysis with policy awareness.

After law school Cernak established himself in Michigan practice. He is licensed to practice in Michigan and has spent his career addressing competition issues for a mix of corporate and institutional clients. His work crosses the boundary between counseling and litigation. He advises on antitrust compliance and represents clients in disputes that raise market structure, pricing and merger concerns.

Cernak’s professional activity extends beyond client files. He serves as Marketing Officer for the American Bar Association’s Section of Antitrust Law, a role that involves programming and outreach within one of the nation’s active antitrust communities. He also maintains membership in the State Bar of Michigan’s Antitrust, Franchising & Trade Regulation Section and participates in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Antitrust Council’s International Competition Policy Working Group. Those affiliations keep him engaged with evolving enforcement priorities and cross-border policy discussions.

At Bona Law PC Cernak is part of a team focused on competition and regulatory matters. He works on merger reviews, civil antitrust litigation, investigations and counseling on trade regulation issues. He regularly engages with opposing counsel, regulators and in-house counsel to frame practical solutions to complex enforcement questions. Colleagues describe his approach as methodical and focused on the legal and economic facets that drive outcomes.

Outside the courtroom and conference room, Cernak’s academic background informs his approach to drafting and argument. The combination of graduate study and legal training at Michigan keeps him attuned to both policy debates and case law developments. He contributes to professional programming through the ABA and the Chamber, and he remains involved in the Michigan bar’s specialized section.

He currently practices at Bona Law PC, where he handles antitrust counseling, litigation and international competition policy matters.
