About Steven

Steven Ballard combines a liberal arts background, a law degree and advanced musical study. He earned a B.A. in history and sociology from Columbia University in 1987. He went on to receive a J.D. from the University of Georgia in 1992. Later he returned to music study and completed a Master of Music in Piano Performance at the New England Conservatory in 1997.

That sequence—arts, law, then conservatory training—has shaped how he approaches his work. The close reading and research skills from a history-sociology education intersect with legal analysis learned in law school. The discipline required for musical study translated into attention to detail in legal files. Those strands combine in the way he runs a practice.

After completing his law degree, Ballard established a practice in Massachusetts. He built a small firm intended to serve clients directly rather than funneling matters through a large institution. Over time that practice became known simply as the Law Offices of Steven Ballard. He operates out of that firm in Massachusetts and represents clients in matters that arise in state courts and administrative settings.

Ballard’s background is uncommon among lawyers. He pursued graduate-level training in piano performance after finishing his legal training. He has balanced studio practice and music study alongside a legal career, and he has drawn on both disciplines when preparing briefs, advising clients and arguing matters in court. The combination of artistic training and legal training informs his style—methodical, paced and attentive to nuance.

Colleagues and clients describe him as deliberate in courtroom and negotiation settings. He tends to favor clear, direct explanations over technical jargon. In client meetings he lays out options and possible consequences in straightforward terms. That practical approach has guided daily office operations and decision-making about case strategy.

He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and runs his own solo practice under the Law Offices of Steven Ballard name. He continues to maintain ties to musical communities while practicing law. His current practice centers on representing individuals and organizations in matters arising under Massachusetts law.
