About Stephen
Stephen Rue has built a long career at the bar that began in New Orleans. He earned his J.D. from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 1988 and later returned to study at Harvard Law School in 2019, where he completed a program in leadership and negotiations. He also holds a certified life coach credential from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, an unusual complement to a litigation practice.
Rue began his legal work in the federal courthouse. In 1986 he served as an intern law clerk for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. After law school he joined Johnson & McAlpine in 1988 and within a few years moved to establish his own office. Since 1991 he has practiced under the name Stephen Rue & Associates, operating a network of offices across the New Orleans metropolitan area.
He is licensed to practice in Louisiana and has taken steps to be admitted in other jurisdictions. His credentials include admission in New York and the District of Columbia, as well as practice rights in the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Western and Middle Districts of Louisiana. That combination has allowed him to handle matters at both the state and federal levels.
Rue’s professional affiliations run broad. He holds membership in Multi-Million Dollar Advocates and the National Trial Lawyers of America. Records list him as CEO of Best Lawyers of America and as a member of Best Lawers, and he has been recognized by New Orleans Magazine as a Top Lawyer and a Legal Kingfish since 2020. He belonged to Super Lawyers from 2010 through 2020 and has been a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association since 1988. He is also listed with the American Bar Association beginning in 2020.
His firm maintains offices in Kenner, on the Westbank, in St. Tammany, New Orleans, Metairie and Slidell. Those locations reflect a practice that serves a broad regional client base rather than a single neighborhood. The firm structure also supports litigating matters in multiple courts and jurisdictions.
Colleagues and clients have noted that Rue pairs litigation experience with training in negotiation and leadership. His life coaching credential is another element he brings to client conversations and settlement talks. Over the course of more than three decades at the bar he has handled matters that required appearances in both state and federal forums.
He currently practices at Stephen Rue & Associates, concentrating on litigation in state and federal courts.
