About Stephen

Stephen Barrera trained in Texas law and has built a career centered on the criminal courts of the state. He earned his Juris Doctor from St. Mary's University School of Law in 2005, where he studied criminal law. The coursework and courtroom clinics during law school set the foundation for the path he followed after graduation.

Early in his career Barrera joined the community of criminal defense practitioners in San Antonio and the surrounding region. He became active in local bar groups and kept close ties to trial work. In 2012 he served as a municipal court judge for the City of La Vernia, a role that gave him direct experience managing dockets, hearing ordinances and misdemeanor matters, and presiding over arraignments and preliminary hearings.

Alongside his time on the bench, Barrera joined professional associations that reflect his practice area. He has been a member of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyers Association since 2008. In 2016 he also joined the Texas State Bar College. Those memberships have kept him connected to continuing education and to colleagues across the state.

Barrera’s courtroom exposure at the municipal level informed his approach to defense work. He developed an understanding of how local prosecutors, clerks and judges handle routine matters and how those early stages of a case can shape outcomes. He has represented clients in front of municipal and state courts and handled matters ranging from ordinance violations to more serious criminal charges.

Colleagues describe him as practical and focused on the procedural and tactical elements of a case. He emphasizes preparation for hearings and trials and adapts strategy to the courthouse where a case is venued. His municipal judgeship is a recurring touchstone in his work; it provides perspective on both sides of courtroom practice.

Today Barrera practices at BCP Criminal Defense Lawyers. His work involves representing individuals in criminal proceedings across Texas, counseling clients on immediate court processes and next steps, and preparing defenses for trial where necessary. He remains active in state and local legal organizations and continues to handle criminal defense matters in Texas courts.
