About Stephanie

Stephanie Montgomery built a foundation in the liberal arts before turning to law. She earned a B.A. from the University of California, San Diego and later received her J.D. from the College of William & Mary. Those two institutions shaped her analytical approach and prepared her for practice in Virginia.

Her career has been based in the Commonwealth. She is a partner at Montgomery, Kelley, & McKinnon P.L.C., where she has practiced for several years. At the firm she handles cases that range from individual consumer matters to more complex business-related bankruptcies. Her work often intersects with property issues, so clients see her for both insolvency and real estate concerns.

She also maintains a role in legal education. Montgomery serves as an adjunct professor at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary. In the classroom she brings practical examples from her practice to discussions about bankruptcy and related topics. Students hear about procedure and strategy in real cases, and she balances doctrinal instruction with practice-oriented perspectives.

Montgomery takes part in a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the Virginia State Bar Association and the Williamsburg/James City County Bar Association. She belongs to the American Bankruptcy Institute and the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers, and she holds membership in the Real Estate Section of the Virginia State Bar Association. Those affiliations keep her connected to developments in bankruptcy law and in local practice circles.

Outside of law firms and classrooms she serves on community and institutional boards. She is a current member of the advisory board at Riverside Doctor’s Hospital, a role that brings a health care governance perspective to her legal work. That position has exposed her to the operational side of institutions that sometimes face financial distress.

Clients and colleagues describe Montgomery as methodical and practical. She takes cases through intake, negotiation, and, when necessary, contested proceedings. Her practice combines bankruptcy counseling, representation in consumer filings, and matters that touch on real estate and creditors’ rights. She currently practices at Montgomery, Kelley, & McKinnon P.L.C., where she concentrates on consumer bankruptcy and real estate-related matters.
