About Stefan J.

Stefan J. Scholl began his academic path studying international relations at Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1985. He went on to law school at the University of Michigan and received his J.D. in 1989. Those years gave him a mix of policy perspective and legal training that would shape a local practice grounded in municipal and private client matters.

His early career moved quickly into public service. In 1992 he served as an assistant city lawyer in both Rochester Hills and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Those municipal roles put him into everyday legal problems cities face: ordinances, contracts, and the kinds of hearings that require plainspoken legal judgment. That same year he joined Beier Howlett, P.C. as an associate, gaining experience in the private firm setting and exposure to a broader docket of civil practice.

Two years later Scholl opened his own office. In 1994 he became president and managing partner of Stefan J. Scholl, P.C. Building a practice from the ground up required different skills than those he had used in city hall or as an associate. He handled client intake, managed case strategy, and ran the business side of a small firm. The transition also kept him connected to municipal law through representation of local clients, while allowing him to take on matters born of private disputes.

Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in the office and direct in the courtroom. He has combined the procedural lessons of municipal practice with the demands of private litigation and transactional work. His background in international relations appears modestly in his approach: attentive to context, aware of competing interests, and inclined to consider longer-term implications for local clients.

Outside the courtroom he has overseen firm administration and the mentoring of younger attorneys. Running a firm for more than two decades has meant adapting to changes in litigation technology and court practice. It has also meant keeping one foot in public law and the other in private representation.

He currently operates Stefan J. Scholl, P.C., serving clients from his private practice and maintaining ties to municipal matters in the region.
