About Robert James

Robert James Engel graduated from Michigan State University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 1979. Those years framed an early interest in the criminal justice system and set the course for a long career in Michigan law.

Shortly after earning his law degree, Engel was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1979. He began his legal work as a prosecutor, handling criminal matters for a local jurisdiction. That early courtroom experience exposed him to case preparation, witness handling and the pressures of trial work. It also gave him a view of criminal cases from the government side.

Over the years Engel remained active in professional circles. He joined the Emmet Charlevoix Bar Association in 1985 and later became affiliated with the Criminal Defense Lawyers of Michigan in 2010. He has maintained membership in the State Bar of Michigan since his admission. Those associations have been the venues for continuing legal education and peer interaction through which he stayed current on changes in criminal law.

The arc of Engel’s career crosses both prosecution and defense. Having prosecuted early on, he later applied that knowledge to defending individuals accused of crimes. That dual perspective informs how he approaches cases. He understands how evidence is gathered and presented and the procedural tactics that often arise in criminal proceedings. He approaches case analysis from the standpoint of what will be persuasive in court, and what practical options are available to a client along the way.

Colleagues note that Engel brings steady courtroom experience to everyday practice. He has spent decades practicing in Michigan courts and retains familiarity with local procedures and judges. He has handled cases at various stages, from arraignment through trial and sentencing. He has also continued to engage in professional education to keep up with statutory and case law developments.

Today, Engel remains an active Michigan practitioner. He represents individuals in criminal matters across state courts and draws on both his prosecutorial background and private practice experience to advise and represent clients. He currently focuses his practice on criminal defense in Michigan.
