About Shawn
Shawn Kasserman earned his law degree from DePaul College of Law in 1990 after completing a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts at Western Illinois University in 1987. He moved quickly from law school into courtroom work and has maintained a steady presence in Illinois federal and state courts since the start of his career. His admissions include the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois and the Illinois state bar.
His first recorded job was outside the legal field. In 1984 he worked as a carpenter-laborer for Mathew A. Wiesbrock Builders. That early experience preceded his entry into Corboy & Demetrio in 1990, where he began as a trial lawyer. He remained at Corboy & Demetrio for many years, becoming a partner in 1998. In 2013 he was a founding member of Tomasik Kotin Kasserman, where he continues to practice.
Kasserman’s career combines courtroom practice with extensive involvement in professional organizations. He has a long record of service to the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, including roles on its Executive Committee and Board of Managers. He serves on the Board of Managers for the association and has maintained membership there since 1991.
Beyond state groups, he is active nationally. He has been a member of the American Association for Justice since 2007 and sits in its Leaders Forum. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and has participated in ABA political action activities. The American Board of Trial Advocates lists him as a member since 2017 and notes his service as Vice President of its Illinois chapter. He became a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2013 and has taken part in that group's outreach and committee work.
Kasserman’s commitments extend into bar governance and legal philanthropy. He serves on the Lawyers Trust Fund as a vice president and on the Board of Directors. He has held leadership roles within the Illinois State Bar Association, including service on its Board of Governors and as treasurer. He chaired or participated in numerous ISBA committees related to budgeting, audit, and civil practice. He also spent nearly a decade in leadership at the Illinois Bar Foundation, serving as president of its board from 2008 to 2017 and participating in its grants and scholarship committees.
He has been involved in local bar activities as well, including long-standing membership in the DuPage County Bar Association and earlier service in the Chicago Bar Association’s young lawyers and judicial evaluation committees. His professional life blends trial work, bar leadership, and nonprofit governance. He currently practices as a founding partner at Tomasik Kotin Kasserman and tries civil cases in state and federal courts as part of his practice focus.
