About Shawn A
Shawn A Stout practices law in Virginia and has built a career centered on criminal defense. He took a conventional path into the profession, completing his legal education at George Mason University School of Law and earning his J.D. in 2010. Those years in law school shaped his approach to advocacy and courtroom work.
After law school he entered practice in Virginia. Over the years he has handled a range of matters in state courts. His work has involved trial preparation, motion practice and client counseling. He has appeared in hearings and trials across multiple jurisdictions within the state. Colleagues describe him as steady in the courtroom and precise in legal filings.
In 2015 he began serving on the board of the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He remains on the board as of 2026. That role places him in regular contact with other defense attorneys around the state. He takes part in meetings and programs aimed at improving practice standards and continuing legal education for defense counsel.
Stout’s practice reflects his board involvement. He handles criminal cases at different stages, from early investigation through trial. He represents individuals charged with misdemeanors and felonies and works on pretrial strategy, evidentiary challenges and client interviews. His caseload requires frequent courtroom appearances and careful coordination with investigators and expert witnesses.
He joined The Irving Law Office, PC as a member of the firm’s Virginia team. At the firm he manages client matters alongside other attorneys and staff. The office environment combines casework, client intake and courtroom scheduling. His role there involves direct client representation and the drafting of pleadings and motions.
Outside court he contributes to the criminal defense community through the association and local legal events. He attends continuing education seminars and participates in panel discussions when schedules allow. In private practice he continues to represent clients in Virginia criminal matters and focuses his work on trial practice and pretrial litigation.
