About Sergey

Sergey Mikhlin earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the City University of New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1996 and a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law in 2001. He completed his legal education as the turn of the century brought new expectations for courtroom experience and client service. Those formative years set a clear direction for his professional life.

After law school he moved into practice in the Northeast and became admitted to practice in both Massachusetts and New York. That dual admission has allowed him to represent clients in a range of state matters across two different legal environments. He handles criminal matters that arise in urban courts and suburban settings alike, often addressing the practical issues defendants face when charged with offenses at the state level.

Mikhlin maintains professional ties through active membership in the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He participates in the association’s efforts to improve practice standards and to stay current on changing law and procedure. Those connections keep him plugged into conversations about case law, sentencing trends, and trial strategies, all of which bear directly on his day-to-day work.

His courtroom work covers a spectrum of criminal cases. He represents clients charged with misdemeanors and felonies, seeks favorable resolutions where possible and prepares for trial when necessary. He also handles pretrial motions, evidentiary matters and sentencing advocacy. Colleagues describe his approach as practical and focused on the particular facts of each file. He aims to present clear, direct arguments to judges and juries rather than relying on broad theoretical claims.

Mikhlin’s training and bar admissions inform a practice that navigates statutory and procedural challenges in two states. He balances time in courtrooms with time advising clients about plea options, potential defenses and collateral consequences. The work requires steady preparation, attention to changing rules and a readiness to respond to developments in a case. His current practice focuses on criminal defense in Massachusetts and New York.
