About Sean C.

Sean C. Crandall combines technical training in electrical engineering with legal training in patent law. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1999, then went on to receive his J.D. from Baylor University School of Law in 2007. The two degrees set the course for a career at the intersection of technology and intellectual property.

Early in his career he worked as a registered patent agent. Beginning in 2005 he practiced as a self-employed patent agent, preparing and prosecuting patent applications on behalf of inventors and companies. That period gave him hands-on experience drafting claims and responding to patent office actions, and it helped him develop an understanding of how technical detail and legal argument fit together.

After finishing law school he became a registered patent lawyer in 2007 and joined Jackson Walker LLP. At the firm he continued to work on patent matters that draw on his electrical engineering background. His legal training allowed him to expand the scope of his practice beyond patent prosecution to broader client counseling on intellectual property issues.

Crandall’s technical roots stretch back to his undergraduate studies. Electrical engineering provided a foundation in circuit design, signal processing and related work common in patent filings for electronics and software. That background informs how he evaluates inventions and communicates technical concepts to patent examiners and opposing counsel.

He is a long-standing member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), holding membership since 2003. Remaining engaged with professional and technical communities has been part of how he stays current on developments in engineering and technology that often show up in patent filings.

Colleagues describe him as methodical and detail-oriented in preparing applications and responses. He takes a practical approach to prosecution, focusing on claim clarity and procedural efficiency. Over time he has maintained a steady practice advising inventors, start-ups and established companies on the preparation and protection of patentable technologies.

He currently practices patent law at Jackson Walker LLP, concentrating on patent prosecution and related intellectual property matters.
