About Sean Alexander
Sean Alexander Doherty practices law across the First Circuit and in the state bars of Massachusetts and Maine. He works from offices in Charlestown and Millis, Massachusetts, and maintains a practice that includes courtroom representation and alternative dispute resolution.
Doherty’s career is grounded in litigation and mediation. He is admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit as well as to the Massachusetts and Maine bars. He has handled matters in both state and federal forums and brings that procedural familiarity to each case he takes on. He also holds a mediator certification through MWI, a credential he uses to help parties resolve disputes without protracted litigation.
Over the years he has moved between contested court proceedings and negotiated settlements. He prepares for trial work and argues before judges when cases require formal adjudication. At the same time he conducts mediation sessions, guiding opposing sides toward practical outcomes. His dual practice allows him to assess when a case should be tried and when a negotiated resolution will better serve a client’s interests.
Colleagues describe him as methodical in courtroom preparation and direct in negotiation. His practice spans the kinds of procedural and evidentiary issues that often arise in multi-jurisdictional matters. He regularly manages filings and hearings in Massachusetts and Maine and handles appeals and federal matters filed in the First Circuit. That mix keeps the work varied and requires attention to differences in court rules between jurisdictions.
He divides his time between his Charlestown and Millis offices to serve clients across the region. In those offices he meets with clients, conducts mediations when appropriate, and represents parties in court. The arrangement allows him to be accessible to clients in both the Boston area and towns further west.
Outside of casework he maintains professional registrations and the mediator credential that supports his work in dispute resolution. He also maintains contacts across the bench and bar that assist in managing procedural and scheduling matters. He practices in both partisan and neutral roles, acting for clients in contested matters and as a mediator when parties seek an independent third-party facilitator.
He currently practices from offices in Charlestown and Millis, handling matters in the First Circuit as well as in Massachusetts and Maine, and serving as a certified mediator through MWI.
