About Scott C.
Scott C. Cox has practiced law for more than three decades. He began his academic path in business, earning a B.A. from the University of Kentucky in 1981, and completed his J.D. at the University of Louisville in 1985. Those years set the foundation for a career spent largely in courtrooms and appellate halls.
He was admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1985 and soon moved into public service. In 1987 he served as an Assistant U.S. Lawyer at the United States Lawyer s Office. That early federal experience gave him direct exposure to government litigation and trial practice at a time when federal criminal and civil caseloads were shifting.
By 1994 he had shifted to private practice and became a partner at Cox & Mazzoli, PLLC. He has represented clients in both state and federal courts. His practice spans matters that reach the Sixth Circuit and the Federal Circuit, reflecting a mix of trial and appellate work. He has appeared in federal proceedings and handled cases on appeal, bringing a courtroom-first approach to complex disputes.
His peers have recognized his trial work. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2011. He is a long-standing member of criminal defense organizations, including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, where his membership is listed as lifetime and dates back to 1987. He also belongs to the Kentucky Academy of Justice and maintains active participation in the Kentucky Bar Association and the Louisville Bar Association, where he has served on the board of directors. His involvement with the Federal Bar Association goes back to 1985 and includes a past presidency.
Colleagues describe him as experienced in handling both the give-and-take of trial work and the careful craft of appellate briefs. He has balanced public-sector and private practice roles across his career, moving between prosecutorial tasks and defense work. That breadth informs how he prepares a case and the tactics he brings to court.
Today he practices at Cox & Mazzoli, PLLC, where his work continues to include criminal defense and federal appellate matters. His current practice focuses on trial and appellate representation in state and federal courts.
