About Scott A.
Scott A. Thompson studied economics at George Washington University, earning a B.A. in 1999. He went on to Fordham University School of Law and received his J.D. in 2008. Those years shaped both his interest in public service and his familiarity with complex litigation.
He began legal work in a traditional large-firm environment. While still in law school he was a summer associate at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson in 2007. After graduation he joined that firm as an associate in 2008. He worked in private practice through the early part of his career and later joined Morrison Cohen LLP as an associate in 2011.
Thompson moved into public defense work in 2012 when he became an assistant public defender. The courtroom work there added trial time to his resume. In 2013 he spent a period overseas as a foreign aid worker with CES Ondangwa. He returned to domestic practice and held roles in prosecutorial and private settings. In 2016 he served as an assistant district lawyer and that same year worked as a senior associate at CHA Law Group, PC. A year later he became the managing lawyer at Thompson Law, a role he has held since 2017.
He is licensed to practice in both New York and Texas. His bar memberships and professional affiliations include the Austin Bar Association, the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and Austin Divorce Resources, reflecting practice ties to the Austin area. Earlier in his career he was involved with the Federal Bar Council American Inn of Court and the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest Junior Advisory Board. He also served as an associate member of the Lloyd Lochridge American Inn of Court from 2017 to 2022.
Across public defense, prosecutorial work and private practice, Thompson has built experience in courtroom litigation and client counseling. His background spans criminal matters, family law cases and civil litigation. He has handled cases from initial charging decisions through trial and post-conviction stages, and he has represented clients in divorce and related family proceedings in Austin. He maintains practice licenses in two states and splits time across matters in New York and Texas.
Since taking on the managing lawyer role at Thompson Law in 2017 he has overseen firm operations while continuing to represent clients in criminal defense, family law and civil litigation matters. He currently practices in New York and Texas, representing clients in criminal, family and civil cases.
