About Ryan H.
Ryan H. James built his path to law in classrooms and courtrooms. He earned a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from Allegheny College in 2007 and completed his J.D. at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 2011. Those years shaped his view of the legal system. They also set him on a course toward criminal defense and appellate practice.
Early in his legal training he worked inside two very different institutions. As a student lawyer in 2010 he represented clients through the Washtenaw County Public Defender’s office. The next year he served as a clerk-intern for the Michigan Supreme Court. Those roles gave him hands-on experience in trial advocacy and exposure to state-level appellate processes. They also provided a framework for judgment and procedure he still uses.
After law school he moved into private practice and later established James Law, LLC. He has maintained ties to the courts in the Third Circuit. That connection has shaped much of his appellate work. He appears in state and federal matters and approaches each case with the same methodical preparation he learned as a clerk and a student advocate.
James’s professional affiliations reflect his practice and his location. He has been a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association since 2012 and joined the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2017. These memberships tie him to local trial and appellate developments and to a community of lawyers handling criminal matters. He attends continuing education and bar activities that center on criminal defense and courtroom procedure.
Colleagues describe him as practical and thorough rather than theatrical. He prepares records and briefs carefully and tests arguments against precedent. His oral advocacy favors clarity over flourish. In court he aims to present issues in terms judges and juries can follow. His background in political science and philosophy still shows in his attention to legal reasoning and statutory interpretation.
Today he practices from James Law, LLC. His caseload includes criminal defense at the trial level and appeals in state and federal courts, including matters before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He maintains memberships in bar organizations tied to criminal defense and local practice.
His current practice concentrates on criminal defense and appellate work.
