About Ruthanne

Ruthanne Withers began her legal journey at Northeastern University School of Law, earning her J.D. in 2005. Her law school years led directly into frontline legal work. She entered practice the same year she graduated and took a staff lawyer position that placed her in community-based legal services.

Her first professional role after law school was as a staff lawyer at Community Legal Aid in 2005. There she handled day-to-day client matters and learned the practical demands of representing individuals in under-resourced settings. The work required practical problem solving and the ability to explain complex procedures to people who were often anxious and under pressure.

In 2010 she expanded her role in the legal community by joining Harvard Law School as a clinical instructor. In that academic setting she taught and supervised law students, guiding them through client interviews, case development and courtroom preparation. The clinical work allowed her to pair hands-on practice with instruction, shaping newer lawyers as she continued to practice.

Her professional credentials include certification to provide Limited Assistance Representation in the Massachusetts Trial Courts. That certification permits a constrained form of representation that many people seek when they need help with specific aspects of a case rather than full representation. It also aligns with her earlier experience in legal aid and clinical teaching, where targeted interventions often have the most immediate effect for clients.

Outside the courtroom she has taken on governance and mentoring roles. She serves as a director of New Hope, Inc., where she participates in board deliberations and organizational oversight. She also holds membership in the Women’s Bar Foundation and has served as a mentor through that organization, working with younger attorneys and law students on career development and professional growth.

Throughout her career she has worked within Massachusetts courts and legal institutions. Her background spans direct client representation, clinical education and nonprofit governance. She continues to combine practice and teaching elements in her work and maintains her certification for Limited Assistance Representation in the Massachusetts Trial Courts. Her current practice concentrates on providing targeted legal help and mentoring within the Massachusetts legal community.
