About Robert Payne Cave

Robert Payne Cave Sr. earned his J.D. from the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville in 1973 after completing a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at the University of Kentucky in 1967. The combination of a scientific undergraduate education and legal training set the stage for a long career in Tennessee’s courts. His academic route is straightforward. It also explains an attention to detail that shows up in his work.

He is admitted to practice in Tennessee and in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. Over the years he has built a practice centered in the state. He is a member of the Greene County Bar Association and maintains ties with colleagues in that community. The bar memberships reflect a practice rooted in local institutions rather than distant specialties.

For many years he has been associated with The Cave Law Office, PLLC, where he serves as Senior Counsel. In that role he handles client consultations and courtroom representation. He also advises on case strategy and helps manage the firm’s litigation responsibilities. The title captures long experience and day-to-day responsibilities rather than an academic distinction.

Colleagues describe him as steady and attentive to procedural detail. Those traits align with a background in chemistry and decades of courtroom work. He has worked on matters that require careful evidence handling and patient development of factual records. That approach is practical. It can be useful in both bench and jury settings.

Membership in the Greene County Bar Association keeps him connected to local practice norms and to other lawyers who appear in the same courts. That local involvement complements the federal admission and allows him to represent clients in state and federal proceedings when necessary. He continues to appear in hearings and manages filings across both jurisdictions.

Outside the courtroom he has been involved in the administration of cases at the firm level and in mentoring junior attorneys. He brings an experienced perspective to case assessment and to preparing material for litigation. The combination of scientific training and long practice in Tennessee gives him a methodical approach to casework.

He continues to serve as Senior Counsel at The Cave Law Office, PLLC. His current practice handles matters in Tennessee and in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee.
