About Robert Houpt
Robert Houpt Thornburg combined an engineering education and a law degree early in his career. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1995. He then completed a J.D. in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Florida in 2000. That mix of technical and legal training has shaped the path he has taken in intellectual property work.
He is admitted to practice in Florida, before the Federal Circuit, and in Illinois. He is also registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, having passed the Patent Bar. Those credentials allow him to handle both patent prosecution and federal litigation matters that touch on intellectual property.
In 2009 he took on an Of Counsel role at Allen Dyer Doppel Milbrath & Gilchrist PA. That position is part of a longer professional trajectory in which he has blended technical subject matter and IP law. The Of Counsel title reflects a role providing specialized patent and trademark guidance within a broader firm context.
Since 2009 he has also been involved in the Florida Bar Business Law Section, serving as Vice Chair of the Intellectual Property Law Committee. He has held that committee post across multiple years, participating in the Section’s ongoing work on IP issues affecting business practice in the state.
Thornburg’s background in chemical engineering informs the type of work he accepts. He is conversant in the technical language and regulatory context that often accompany chemical and related technologies. That technical fluency supports patent drafting and prosecution, where precise description and claim structure are essential.
Based in Miami, Thornburg practices as a patent and trademark lawyer. He handles patent prosecution before the USPTO and engages in trademark registration and related IP counseling. His practice also includes matters that may proceed in federal courts, including appeals at the Federal Circuit. He currently concentrates on patent prosecution, trademark registration, and intellectual property counseling for clients in the Miami area.
