About Robert E. Byrne

Robert E. Byrne Jr. graduated from Cornell University in 1997 with a B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations. He went on to earn his J.D. from Regent University School of Law in 2002. Those two institutions shaped the start of a legal career that has combined appellate exposure and active involvement in professional organizations.

Fresh out of law school, Byrne served as a judicial law clerk in 2002 for the Honorable D. Arthur Kelsey at the Court of Appeals of Virginia. That year on an appellate bench gave him an early look at brief writing, oral argument and the mechanics of appellate decision-making. He then moved into private practice and, in 2004, worked as an associate at Martin & Raynor, P.C., gaining practical courtroom and client experience.

Byrne holds admissions to practice in Virginia, before the Fourth Circuit, and before the U.S. Supreme Court. Those credentials reflect both state and federal work and allow him to appear in trial courts and on appeal. He has combined courtroom work with volunteer leadership in bar-related groups, taking on roles that focused on professional development and access to legal resources for young lawyers and the community.

He has held several positions in professional and alumni organizations. Byrne chaired the Professional Development Conference for the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference during 2008–2009. He led the Children and the Law Commission for the Young Lawyers Conference from 2009 to 2010. He has also been active in the Charlottesville Albemarle Bar Association and chaired its Community Relations Committee in 2009–2010. Earlier, he chaired the Regent University Executive Alumni Board in 2006–2007. Those roles involved organizing programs, coordinating speakers and helping to set agendas for continuing legal education and public outreach.

Colleagues describe Byrne as measured in court and precise in writing. His clerkship and subsequent practice gave him experience handling appeals and managing complex filings. He has balanced courtroom preparation and bar leadership, often working on projects that bring younger lawyers into practice management and public-service work.

He practices at MartinWren, P.C., where his work includes appearances in Virginia courts and federal tribunals as well as appellate matters before the Fourth Circuit and other courts where he is admitted.
