About Robert D.

Robert D. Lewin graduated from Amherst College in 1966 and earned his J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 1971. Those formative years placed him at the intersection of classic liberal arts study and professional legal training. The transition from campus to courtroom came quickly.

He began his legal career in 1971 as an assistant at the Middlesex County (Mass.) district lawyer's office. That early prosecutorial experience gave him a front-row view of courtroom procedure and case preparation. In 1975 he moved into private practice and established The Law Offices of Lewin & Lewin, setting up a practice devoted to criminal defense work.

Over the decades Lewin has handled criminal matters in state and federal forums. He is admitted in Massachusetts and before the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. His admissions also include the U.S. Tax Court, the federal courts generally, and the First Circuit. That range of jurisdictions has allowed him to appear at trial levels and on appeal, and to address criminal issues that touch on federal tax law as well as state criminal statutes.

Lewin’s practice has centered on criminal defense since the mid-1970s. He has represented clients in a variety of criminal matters, moving cases through pretrial stages, trial, and, when necessary, appellate briefing. His courtroom work has taken him from county courthouses in Massachusetts to federal courtrooms in the district and appellate arenas. The experience from his early public-sector role informed his approach in private defense practice, particularly in case strategy and evidence handling.

Active in professional circles, Lewin holds memberships in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is also a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Section and the Middlesex County Bar Association. Those affiliations keep him engaged with developments in criminal law and the broader defense bar.

Now in practice at The Law Offices of Lewin & Lewin, he continues to represent individuals in criminal matters in state and federal courts. He maintains his practice in criminal defense at The Law Offices of Lewin & Lewin, handling criminal cases in state and federal courts.
