About Richard (Rick) W

Richard (Rick) W Smith built a practical path to the law that began in the classroom and moved into public service. He earned a B.S. in Communication, concentrating in interpersonal and small group communication, from Dixie State College. He followed that with a J.D. from Washburn University School of Law.

Early hands-on experience came in public offices. In 2012 he interned in the United States Senate, an experience that exposed him to federal legislative processes and constituent work. Two years later he served as a legal intern at the Kansas Corporation Commission, where he gained exposure to regulatory matters and administrative procedure.

After law school Rick Smith moved into law firm work and courtroom preparation. He worked as a law clerk for Wes Winsor Law PLLC in 2016 and for Legally Mine, LLC in 2017. Those roles involved drafting pleadings, research, and supporting trial preparation. In 2018 he joined Mack & Associates, LLC as a lawyer, taking on greater client responsibilities and handling matters through disposition.

In 2021 he opened Rick Smith Law LLC. That move marked a transition to practice ownership and client-facing case management. He handled a range of civil matters while building systems for intake, document drafting, and client counseling. In 2024 he established his current practice under the name Rick Smith, Lawyer, identifying estate planning as a core area of his practice.

Smith is admitted to practice in Kansas and Utah. His background combines experience in regulatory settings, private firms, and small-practice management. That variety informs how he approaches routine and complex client issues. He tends to work directly with individuals and families on planning documents, estate administration steps, and related probate matters.

Colleagues describe him as someone who prefers clear explanations and practical documents. He spends time translating legal choices into plain language so clients can decide what to do next. That starts at intake and continues through execution of wills, trusts, and powers of attorney.

He continues to handle general civil matters that intersect with planning and administration. His practice is based in his own firm, where he manages day-to-day operations and client services. He currently practices under the name Rick Smith, Lawyer, concentrating on estate planning matters.
