About Richard

Richard McAvoy built a steady legal path from small-town beginnings to a courtroom-ready practice. He took a direct route through two well-regarded schools and into both firm and in-house roles before opening his own office.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Marist College in 2007 and completed his legal education at the University of Notre Dame, receiving his J.D. in 2011. Those formative years set the groundwork for a career that has included both private firm work and corporate experience.

After law school he joined Alston & Bird LLP as a senior associate in 2011. There he handled matters typical of a large national firm and developed skills in research, drafting and client counseling. In 2016 he moved to Novo Nordisk, where his role shifted into a corporate environment and exposed him to the internal side of legal operations.

McAvoy is licensed in North Carolina and holds admissions that allow him to appear in the Eleventh Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. He maintains memberships in the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina State Bar, reflecting an ongoing engagement with the state’s legal community.

He eventually established The Law Office of Richard McAvoy, PLLC. Running a solo practice has given him control over case selection and the chance to shape the client experience. He handles representation in state and federal matters and provides counsel to individuals and organizations that require tailored legal attention.

Colleagues describe him as methodical and direct in his work. His background spans the procedural rigor of a large firm and the practical pressures of in-house counsel. Those experiences inform how he prepares cases and advises clients on next steps.

Outside the courtroom McAvoy keeps a practical approach to professional development, remaining active in bar activities and staying current on developments that affect his clients. He focuses his current practice on representing clients in state and federal matters and providing day-to-day legal counsel.
