About Richard Carl Perry
Richard Carl Perry Jr. completed his legal education at Birmingham School of Law, earning his J.D. in 2004. Before law school he stayed in Mississippi for graduate work, taking an M.S. in Business and Economic Development from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2002. He earlier earned a B.S. in Community Planning and Regional Development from the same university in 1999. Those degrees shaped an interest in institutions and local systems that later influenced his legal work.
After law school Perry entered practice in Alabama. He joined local bar associations early in his career, becoming a member of the Shelby County Bar Association in 2010 and the Birmingham Bar Association in 2013; he remains active in both. Over the years he has built a practice that blends courtroom work with family-court responsibilities, and he has taken roles that require both legal judgment and community engagement.
Perry holds a Guardian ad Litem certification in family law. That credential signals regular involvement in contested family matters where the court appoints an independent representative to speak for children's interests. He is also admitted to practice in Alabama and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, enabling him to handle matters at the state and federal appellate level when necessary.
His career has included work on cases that span divorce and criminal defense. The firm name where he practices reflects that range: Alabama Divorce and Criminal Lawyers. In family court he has served in roles that intersect with child welfare, custody disputes and the financial questions that arise in separation. In the criminal realm he has handled matters that require familiarity with both trial procedure and local court practices.
Colleagues describe Perry as straightforward in court and prepared at hearings. He keeps ties to the legal community through his bar memberships and by maintaining the certification that allows him to serve as a guardian ad litem. He practices out of Alabama and represents clients in proceedings that can range from state trial courts to appeals in the Eleventh Circuit. His current practice centers on divorce and criminal defense matters.
