About Randy
Randy Sorrels began his legal journey in Houston, earning a B.A. in Political Science and Communications in 1984 and a J.D. from South Texas College of Law in 1987. He moved quickly into practice after law school and has spent his career in Texas courts and federal districts across the state. His education set the stage for a long tenure in trial work and bar leadership.
His early years in the profession included time as an associate at Fulbright & Jaworski beginning in 1987. By 1990 he had taken on a leadership role as managing partner at Abraham Watkins, a position that marked the start of decades managing major civil litigation teams. He remained active in trial practice and bar activities while serving in those management roles. In 2019 he served as President of the State Bar of Texas, a year that placed him at the center of policy and professional development in the state legal community. In 2021 he became a partner at Sorrels Law.
Sorrels is admitted to practice in Texas and in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Western and Eastern Districts of Texas. He holds board certifications from the National Board of Trial Advocacy in Civil Practice Advocacy and Civil Trial Law. The Texas Board of Legal Specialization has certified him in Personal Injury Trial Law and Civil Trial Law. Those credentials reflect a career built around courtroom work and complex civil litigation.
He has been active in many professional organizations. His memberships include the American Bar Association, American Board of Trial Advocates, American Association for Justice, Texas Trial Lawyers Association and Houston Trial Lawyers Association, among others. He has held leadership roles in several groups: president of the Houston Trial Lawyers Foundation and the Houston Lawyers Referral Service in 2000–2001, president of the Dispute Resolution Center in 2003–2004, and president of the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists in 2014–2015. He has served as a director of South Texas College of Law Houston since 2013 and has been involved with the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society.
Over the years Sorrels has combined trial practice with bar work and institutional service. He has remained active in legal education and professional organizations while continuing to try cases and manage firms. He currently practices civil trial and personal injury law at Sorrels Law.
