About Randall
Randall Roden began a professional life that moves between public service and the courtroom. He served in the United States Army in 1966, then returned to civilian life and turned his attention to higher education. He earned a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973 and continued at the University of North Carolina School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1976.
After law school Roden entered private practice and by 1983 was working as a lawyer at Tharrington Smith, LLP. Over the years his practice has crossed a range of civil matters. He has handled litigation in state and federal forums, taken appeals, and been involved in cases that touch on tax, contractual and business disputes. Courtroom work and appellate filings have both been regular parts of his caseload.
Roden is admitted in North Carolina and holds a number of federal admissions. His courtroom credentials include admission to the United States Claims Court, the United States Tax Court and the United States Supreme Court. He is admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of North Carolina as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the District of Columbia Circuit. He is also a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
His professional associations reflect a practice that mixes trial work and subject-matter variety. He belongs to the American Bar Association’s Litigation Section and to several sections of the North Carolina Bar Association, including Litigation, Business, Intellectual Property and Construction Law. Locally he is active in the Wake County Bar Association and in the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. Those memberships have informed both trial strategy and case selection across his career.
Roden’s office is listed at 150 Fayetteville Street. He has taken cases that require representation in federal trial courts, in tax and claims tribunals, and on appeal. He maintains an active litigation docket and continues to represent clients in contested proceedings across state and federal venues.
He currently practices at Tharrington Smith, LLP and handles civil litigation, federal appeals and matters in the Tax and Claims Courts as part of his ongoing work.
